Ultimate Garden Fails

We started our garden journey in August of 2023, where we started from scratch with setting up garden beds, buying dirt to fill them and planting seeds or seedlings. Our garden hasn't been going that long yet, but so far we have learnt a lot, including our fails a long the way. Some of our failures have been from negligance, some have been accidents but we are still learning and want to share our fails, so you don't have to make these same mistakes. So here are a few fails, and I'm sure I have missed some and will continue to make them, but for now, here's a few - **Fail 1 Homemade disease control: We had powdery mildew on our zuchini plants and we sprayed them with a homemade mixture, please note that there was nothing wrong with the mixture, the problem was that we sprayed them at the wrong time of the day. So you spray the mixture on the leaves, but the problem was that the spray was applied in the heat of the afternoon, which ended up burning the leaves. It was so hot that the liquid spray attracted the sun and in turn burnt the leaves and almost killed the plants. We did have to rip out a couple but ended up reviving the others by chopping off the dead leaves and fertilising them. **Fail 2 PH level: Another fail, which I'm sure many people arent aware of, but if you want to grow a garden which is plentiful, you must cheack the PH of the soil. This matters as each plant needs a different amount of acidity in the soil to grow to the fullest. So be sure to check the PH level of your soil before planting your veggies and adjust it accordingly using a variety of products including lime, clay, sulphur etc. **Fail 3 No recticulation: none of our garden beds have reticulation, so every morning we have to water the garden by hand. It becomes very time consuming and on those super hot days, the garden has to be watered an extra time to ensure the plants don't die. We will definitely be investing in some retic when we do our season change over, and have some drippers put into the beds. **Fail 4 Too many seeds: I mean this isn't really a fail but we have been getting into the habit of when sowing seeds, we do a full tray of them and then end up with too many seedlings and no where to plants them. Or end up planting so many beds with the same thing. I guess the fail is that we then try and plant them all and end up planting the too close together, so they can't reach their full potential. So from now on we will be sowing less seeds and planting them in the correct way. I just really hate throwing seedlings away and not giving them a chance to grow. There are many more fails, I'm sure, so please stay tuned for those and how we have rectified our fails. Please feel free to send me a message if you have any tips or questions.

How to...

Without buying too many strawberry plants, you can double the amount of strawberries you're growing just by doing this simple step.

Corn: Before, After & Fails

We tried planting corn seeds in our backyard, but we only got 2 out of the whole garden bed planted that actual grew. We believe this is due to no morning sunlight, this is our assumtion. We ended up buying seedlings from our local garden centre and planted them in a different garden bed in the front of our yard where they would recieve plenty of sun. At first, if you look at the first picture, they dont look like they are doing so well, but after I trimed back all the brown dead bits, gave them plenty of water for a few days and adding straw around them, they really started to take off. These pictures are taken over a couple of months, right up until just before harvesting. Looking forward to them being ready to harvest and hopefully get some nice corn from them. The harvest was decent and got some great tasting corn. Unfortunately we didn't store our corn correctly and ended losing most of them as they dried out and were no good. So live and learn. If you have any tips on storing freshly picked corn, please send me a comment at the bottom on the page.

The Garden

We bought a house that had a decent amount of land on which we decided to put in a garden that would be benificial to our needs and would save us money in the long run. We cut down all the native plants that had made their home in the yard and put in garden beds that would seervice our needs by growing organic food that we could live off. We started with 3 garden beds whitch soon grew to 12.
